Text Box: Cleaner Production Awards for your Business.
Introduction
The Sri Lanka National Cleaner Production Centre has been functioning for the past six years promoting Cleaner Production in enterprises. During this period many organizations in manufacturing as well as other sectors have adopted cleaner production practices in their day to day operations and benefited significantly. They have not only benefited economically but also have become socially better operations with fewer burdens on the environment.
Cleaner Production is a general term that describes a preventive approach to industrial and service activities so as to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and the environment. It is a broad strategy that encompasses what some countries call waste minimization, waste avoidance, pollution prevention, eco-efficiency and green productivity. It is about how we can produce our goods and services with minimum environmental impacts under the present technological and economic limitations. It does not deny growth; it merely insists that growth to be ecologically sustainable.
Cleaner Production (CP) can be used to increase the productivity of a business by ensuring a more efficient use of raw materials, energy, and water and also promote its environmental performance through the reduction of wastes and emissions at source. A significant percentage of wastes normally generated in enterprises can be prevented without any new technology (what we call the low-hanging fruits). However, for a company to enjoy full benefits of CP, technological changes will be necessary.
So far over 200 companies have gone through Cleaner Production under NCPC’s Cleaner Enterprise Program.  It is in this context, that awards for Cleaner Production have been identified to recognize and appreciate enterprises that have been environmentally friendly and also to provide an incentive for more businesses to move towards cleaner production. We also hope to attract more players in the years to come.
 Specific Objectives of the Programme
·                     To recognize and appreciate businesses that have performed well in resources conservation and carried out operations in environmentally friendly manner.
·                     To make enterprises environmentally compliant using profitable and voluntary approaches
·                     To encourage the habit of measurement of important consumption parameters in the production process
·                     To educate businesses on techniques and models of cleaner production that are suitable for their needs
·                     To create a critical mass of business leaders that will help promote the application of cleaner production.
·                     To direct public attention towards the importance of cleaner production as a tool for increased business productivity and competitiveness
·                     To provide a comparative marketing advantage for firms that win the award
 The Awards
These awards are meant for progressive companies and service organizations that have voluntarily adopted cleaner production as a tool for increasing their production efficiency while at the same time eliminating or at least minimizing their wastes and emissions at source rather than treating them after they have been generated. It targets organizations that have realized demonstrable benefits such as quality improvement, easier penetration of and easier legal and regulatory compliance, new market opportunities, improvements in the work environments, better public image and easier legal and regulatory compliance.
If your organization has carried out cleaner production in one way or the other, you are qualified to participate in this programme.
