4th APRCP was held in Chiang-mai
The
4th Asia Pacific Roundtable on Cleaner Production
was held in Chiang-mai, Thailand from 20th to 22nd
of February. 273 participants from 26 countries participated
at the roundtable. The main theme of the 4th APRCP
was harmonizing the businesses and environment.
A delegation of government officials,
University academics, public & private sector personnel
including Mr. Nihal Abeysekera, Senior Vice President
of Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industries
of Sri Lanka, Mr. Roy Jayasinghe, Additional Secretary,
Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy
& Investment Promotion, Ms Padmini Batuwitage, Director
(Environment) of Ministry of Environment & Natural
Resources, Prof. Laxman Jayathilake (Dean, Faculty
of Engineering, University of Ruhuna) and other Cleaner
Production Professionals represented Sri Lanka at
the 4th APRCP Mr. Nihal Cooray, Manager SMED / SPX,
Mr. Nimal Perera, Consultant (Cleaner Production)
SMED & Mr. Sena Peiris, Director, National Cleaner
Production Centre presented papers on the progress
of CP in Sri Lanka. Mr. Nihal Abeysekera who is the
current vice Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Roundtable
for Cleaner Production chaired the first plenary session
of the roundtable.
The 5th APRCP will be held in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia in April 2004.

Awarding of Certificates to
AIMF Course Participants
The
participants who successfully Completed the Australasian
Institute of Metal Finishing course on “ Cleaner Production
in Metal Finishing” were awarded certificates at a
ceremony held at the Holiday Inn on the 11th of February
2003. The course was organized by NCPC and was conducted
by Mr. Darrell Reeve, an international consultant
on CP and Metal Finishing. It was conducted from the
28th October to the 1st of November 2002. The content
of the course provided training on improving economic,
environmental performance in the metal finishing industry
in Sri Lanka, to the participating industrialists.

Matara Chamber of Commerce
and Industries Conducts CP Awareness program
for Tea Factories in the Southern Province.
Matara
Chamber of Commerce and Industries conducted an Awareness
seminar on applying CP in the tea industries, for
the southern province. The National Cleaner Production
Centre of Sri Lanka conducted this program. The owners/managers
were made aware of the waste minimization techniques
for tea factories to save resources / energy and also
were educated on international certification such
as ISO 9000/14000.

Matale Chamber of Commerce and
Industries Conducts and Awareness Program
on Productivity and CP to SME’s in the district.
An
awareness seminar organized by the Matale Chamber
of Commerce and Industries focused on introducing
owners of Small and Medium Enterprises in the district
on ways to enhance their productivity. This was conducted
by NCPC. The participants were also introduced to
CP and good house keeping methods. Also present at
this occasion was Hon . Sanjeeva Kaviratne MP for
the District of Matale.

IESL Trains Engineers on CP
A five-day training program was
conducted by the Institute of Engineers, Sri Lanka
for engineers. The Ministry of Environment and Natural
Resources as well as the National Cleaner Production
Centre supported this program. The participants underwent
classroom training and field exposure on how to conduct
CP in and industrial plant. The participants who successfully
completed the training program were awarded certificates
at a simple ceremony held on the 31st of January 2003.
