Consultant Development Training Programme on Water Auditing and Water Footprint Assessment 2023

Based on SLS ISO 14046:2021 Standard and Water Footprint Assessment Manual

Background

Water is an essential natural resource.

The issue of water and its management has become increasingly central to the global debate on sustainable development. This interest has been driven by growing water demand, increasing water scarcity in many areas and/or degradation of water quality. This drives the need for a better understanding of water related impacts as a basis for improved water management at local, regional, national and global levels.

It is therefore desirable to manage water in a systematic way with more focus on improved water use efficiency

Water efficiency at facility level could be achieved by conducting a water audit. A Water Audit is a “Systematic Approach of Identifying, Measuring, Monitoring and Reducing the water consumption by various activities”. One should know exactly how the water is being used in his premises prior to planning any water management program and it is achieved by conducting a water audit.

Water footprint assessment is an analytical tool, it can be instrumental in helping to understand how activities and products relate to water scarcity and pollution and related impacts and what can be done to make sure activities and products do not contribute to unsustainable use of freshwater. As a tool, a water footprint assessment provides insight, it does not tell people ‘what to do’. Rather it helps people to understand what can be done.

The SLS ISO standard (SLS ISO 14046:2021) which is based on Water Footprint Assessment Manual (developed by Water Footprint Network) aims to provide a harmonized framework that can be used for a transparent, consistent, and credible assessment and reporting of water footprint results of products, processes, or organizations. According to the standard, a water footprint assessment should consider water consumption in all stages of the life cycle of a product from raw material acquisition to final disposal.
